Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are recently installed on Chennai in ECR highways. TN became the first state in India to have ANPR cameras.

ANPR camera uses optical recognition of characters (OCR) to read the number plates of vehicles. It has the capability to read characters while the vehicle is moving.

It reads the characters written on the number plate, fetches the details and sends it to the control room of police. It is restricted to certain angles (beta and alpha) and distances (dz and dx) since it is a static camera.

Since these details are connected to the central information commission, the fine receipt will be sent to the particular person's address who broke the rules.

The rule breakings include more than two people on a bike, high luggage, rash driving, without helmet driving, stopping behind the zebra-cross, vehicle thefts.

By CCTV cameras, the crime rate has been significantly reduced says the Chennai city police commissioner A.K.Vishwanathan.
