Telescope to be constructed at Mauna Kea

Mauna kea (in Hawaii) was chosen as the best place for constructing the huge 1.4 billion dollar telescope.

The native Hawaiian's consider Mauna kea as sacred mountain and protest since 2009 when this telescope construction discussions were made.

It was called Thirty Metre Telescope (TMT), the name for the diameter of its mirror. The telescope will be 18 stories tall and will provide astronomers an opportunity to better observe planets and black holes.

On July 15th, this native Hawaiians chained themselves to a metal grate in the road and started their protest. It is going on till now.

In case the site does not, in fact, work out, TMT has a backup plan to build the telescope in La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain.
